In this article, I discuss what the WordPress Media Library is and how to use it. You’ll learn how to upload images and upload files so that you can use them in your WordPress posts and WordPress pages.
What is the WordPress Media Library?
The WordPress Media Library is the place where all your images and files are stored in the WordPress Admin. Here you can view your media in a list or grid format.
To view the media library in the grid format, select the grid icon above the media. The grid format is the default view of the WordPress Media library.
If you prefer, you can change the view to show the images in a list. Select the list icon above the images and files. The media library is now displayed in a list.
In the WordPress Media Library list view, the files in the media library are listed by date order. Click the column headers to sort the list by a different file attribute.
In the list, a thumbnail of the image (or a thumbnail image of a document) and the file name for the image or file is displayed. The username of the person who uploaded the file along with the date and the comment count is displayed.
In addition, there is an “Uploaded to” column. The “Uploaded to” column shows whether or not a media library item is attached to a WordPress post or page.
A media library item is automatically attached to a page or post when the file is uploaded to the Media Library while editing a page or post. See below, on how to add images to WordPress for more information.
To attach an item to existing content, click the “Attach” link in the “Uploaded to” column. The “Attach to existing content” dialog box will be displayed.
Select a page or post and then click the “Select” button. The name of the file is now shown in the “Uploaded to” column. Select the “Detach” link below the page or post title to detach.
