How Tags Work in WordPress

WordPress tags are used to organize your posts on your WordPress blog.

Unlike categories that have a hierarchy, tags are used as keywords for your posts.

You can add one or more tags to a WordPress post.

What is a tag page?

A tag page is a WordPress page that lists all the post that have been assigned that specific tag on the Edit Post page.

By default, the posts are displayed in reverse chronological order.  So, the most recent post for that tag is displayed first.

How To Change The Number Of Posts On A Tag Page

You can change the number of posts that are displayed on the first page of a tag.

From the WordPress Admin menu, Select “Settings” and then select “Reading”.

On the Reading page change “Blog pages show at most” to the number of posts you want to be displayed on each Tag page.  Then click the “Save Changes” button.

This setting will be used on all pages that dynamically show blog posts including the Homepage.

To create a tag in WordPress, Select the “Posts” setting on the WordPress Admin Panel menu.  Then select “Tags”.

Under the “Add New Tag” heading, enter the Name for the Tage.  The name will be used as the Page Title and Page Heading.

Enter the slug.  The slug will be used as part of the URL for the tag page.

Enter a description for the tag.

Click the “Add New Tag” button to save the tag.

The tag will now be in the tag list.

How To Create A WordPress Tag On A Post

You can also create a tag when you are creating a new post or editing a post.

Scroll down to the Tag box on the right-hand side of the post page.  Enter a name for the tag.  And then click the “Add” button.

The tag will be added to the post.

How To Edit A Tag In WordPress

To edit a tag in WordPress, Select the “Posts” setting on the WordPress Admin Panel menu.  Then select “Tags”.

Hover over the name of the tag in the tag list.  Select “Edit”

The “Edit Tag” page is displayed.  You can update the tag settings and then click “Update”.  If you select “Delete”, you will be prompted to confirm.  If you select “OK”, the WordPress post tag is removed.

How To Add Pages To A Tag

With the basic install of WordPress, you cannot add a page to a tag.  Only posts can have tags.

However, you can add a plugin that will allow you to add a page to a tag.

Select “Add New” from the Plugins menu item on the WordPress Admin menu.

Then enter “Post Tags and Categories for Pages” in the Keyword Box.

Scroll down until you see the plugin box.  And click the “Install Now” button.  When the install is complete, click the “Activate” button.

You will now be able to add tags (and categories) to WordPress pages.  The pages will appear on the tag pages that they have been assigned.
