A WordPress category page allows you to organize your WordPress posts. In this article, I show you how categories work in WordPress. You will learn how to create WordPress categories and how to add a category to a post.
You will also learn a workaround so that you can add a category to a WordPress page.
How Categories Work in WordPress
WordPress categories are used to organize your posts on your WordPress blog. Categories have a hierarchy structure so you can create a category and that category can be the parent to other categories.
Categories are usually used to make sub-sections on your blog. It is better to have three to five parent categories with sub-categories then to have more than five or six categories.
Since categories are often displayed in the header menu of your blog too many parent categories can clutter up your menu and make your blog hard to navigate. So group sub-categories that are related to each other under parent categories.
I show you how to create a parent category below.
What is a category page?
A category page is a WordPress page that lists all the post that have been assigned that specific category on the Edit Post page.
By default, the posts are displayed in reverse chronological order. So, the most recent post for that category is displayed first.
How To Change The Number Of Posts On A Category Page
You can change the number of posts that are displayed on the first page of the category.
From the WordPress Admin menu, Select “Settings” and then select “Reading”.
How To Add A Parent Category In WordPress
To add a parent category in WordPress, go to the category page of a category that you would like to make a child or sub-category. Then select a category from the dropdown next to the “Parent Category” label. That selected category is now a parent category.
How To Remove The Uncategorized Category In WordPress
There is no way to delete the uncategorized in WordPress if it is the default category. However, you can edit the Uncategorized category. Change the name and slug. Then click “Update”.
There is now no Uncategorized category.
How To Add A Category To A Menu In WordPress
To add a category to a menu in WordPress, select “Appearance” and then “Menus” on the WordPress Admin menu.
How To Create A Dropdown Category In WordPress On A Menu
Whenever you add a category to a menu, the category will show on the top level of the menu. To create a dropdown category on the WordPress menu, you can drag the menu under a category and to the right. Click the “Save Menu” button to save the menu.
A WordPress category page is one way to organize your WordPress post. You can also use tags to organize your posts. Tags do not have a hierarchy and are usually used to label a post with a keyword when you don’t want to create a new category.
