Guest blogging (also known as guest posting) is best known as a means for backlinking and monetizing your blog. In reality, you get twice the benefits each time you submit a guest post! So today, I’ll be tackling two big questions… What is guest blogging? And what makes it such an effective blog strategy?
What Is A Guest Post?
A guest post is basically a type of blog post that you write. But instead of it appearing on your blog, it is published on another person’s blog or website.
This makes you the guest or contributor.
Like any blog post, a guest post has to be 100% original. It normally includes a brief bio of the author and a link to their website – found at the bottom of the article.
Guest blogging is often thought of as a blog monetization strategy, and a quick way to get backlinks. And yet it has so much more to offer!
The Benefits of Guest Blogging
Now that I’ve explained what is guest blogging, let’s explore how you can benefit from guest blogging opportunities.
1. Brand awareness and exposure
Whenever you submit a guest post, you’re not just providing fresh content for someone else. You’re also exposing yourself to a wider audience – namely, the readers of the blog where you did a guest post.
As the author, you’ll be recognized for your contribution. You can also add a short biography at the end of the article. When people read your guest post, they’ll see this and know more about you and the brand or company you represent.
2. Increase traffic
Guest blogging doesn’t just help with brand awareness. It increases your traffic as well. Adding links to your blog from a guest post can encourage readers to click-through. Depending on where you’re posting, you can place up to 3 links in your article.
My advice: focus on writing guest posts that add value to blogs. Give readers something fresh to look forward to, and they might just convert into your fans and potential customers.
3. Build relationships
One of the least known benefits of guest blogging is that it connects you with a community of bloggers. Having good relationships will open doors to guest blogging opportunities, along with benefits of increased exposure and traffic.
4. Backlinks and SEO
Guest posting is first and foremost a backlinking strategy. At least that’s how it used to be. Bloggers would partner with each other to exchange guest posts and links. That way, they could give each other a boost.
Unfortunately, low-quality and ‘spammy’ websites started taking advantage of guest blogging. They would submit guest posts to various sites and cheat their way up search engine rankings.
Does this mean you can’t use guest blogging to get backlinks? Not necessarily. But if you’re doing it for search engine optimization or SEO, you have to be careful which sites you submit a guest post to.
5. Generate blog income
Unfortunately, most sites don’t pay guest bloggers. When you ask them what is guest blogging, they don’t consider it a source of blog income.
However, there are still a bunch of guest blogging opportunities that pay. Guest Post Tracker has useful resource of 121 Blogs That Pay For Guest Posts.
Getting Started on Guest Posting
Now that I’ve answered your question of what is guest blogging, you need to take a step back and decide on your goals. Knowing what you want will help you identify which types of posts work best as guest blogs.
You need to ask yourself…
- Do you want to establish your authority in a chosen industry?
- Would you rather get exposure for your blog?
- Or do you want to get backlinks for your website?
Sizeable blogs with good engagement are the perfect guest blogging opportunities if you want both exposure and backlinks. But only the top blogs can get you all three. If you’re simply after backlinks and SEO, look for blogs with a solid root domain authority.
Sure, guest blogging takes some reaching out. But once you find the right partners, you can finally get started on guest posts!
