What is an Ad Network? And How Do Bloggers Make Money With It?

Google AdSense used to be the only way you could monetize a blog using ads. Nowadays, there’s an entire ad network list you could sign up for! But before I show you how bloggers make money with it, you need to learn what is an ad network.

To help you get started, I’ve included recommendations for top ad networks you could join.

Alternatives to Google Ads

Blog ads are still the easiest way to make money online for free. But let’s face it. Google AdSense doesn’t pay as much as it used to. Ad networks like AdThrive and BuySellAds have surpassed the advertising mogul, giving bloggers better opportunities to earn.

What is An Ad Network?

Advertising or ad networks refer to companies which connect advertisers with publishers – that’s you. When you sign up with an ad network, you also get access to hundreds of advertisers looking for bloggers and website owners who can host their ads.

So what is an ad network? For publishers like you, it is a platform that allows you to display ads on your blog or website. For advertisers, it is a means to find suitable publishers who can promote their brand, products, or services.

Are ad networks better than AdSense?

Google AdSense is one of many examples of ad networks. While it’s easy to join, it may take time to get approved. You can try my AdSense approval tricks so you don’t have to wait too long. But if you can’t meet Google’s standards, you’ll only get rejected.

More reasons why ad networks are better than AdSense…

  • Higher payout rates
  • Ad networks offer CPC, CPM, and CPA ads
  • Overall more earnings for you!

There are plenty of alternatives to Google ads with better rates. And unlike Google AdSense which limits you to CPC or cost per click advertising, ad networks offer CPM (cost per thousand views) and CPA (cost per action) advertising.

Ad networks provide more opportunities for blog monetization. So yes, they’re definitely better than AdSense.

CPC vs CPM vs CPA Ads – What’s the difference?

All are effective ways to earn money from blog ads. However, the payout is different for these three methods:

  • CPC or “cost per click” ads pay each time someone clicks on them
  • CPM or “cost per thousand views” pay for every 1,000 views an ad gets
  • CPA or “cost per action” ads pay for every action performed (i.e. sale, newsletter subscription)

As I’ve explained in 28 Ways to Monetize a Blog, Google AdSense only displays CPC ads on your blog. Ad networks can display CPC, CPM, and CPA ads.

How Bloggers Make Money with Ad Networks

Since we already tackled what is an ad network, let’s get to even bigger questions that need answering.

How do ad networks work?

Once you’ve successfully signed up for an ad network, you will be added to their roster of publishers. But first, you have to place a special code on your blog or website so you can start showing ads.

You get to choose where you want ads to appear. It depends on where you place the code. These ad spaces will be auctioned off to advertisers belonging to the same network. The advertiser with the highest bid will have their ads displayed on your blog or site.

How do bloggers make money with ad networks?

That code you added? It’s not just for putting ads on your blog. It also enables ad networks to track the number of clicks, views, and action on your ads, so they’ll know how much to pay you.

Ad networks get a cut from advertisers. They will pay you a certain amount based on the number of clicks, views, or actions performed on your blog ads.

How much can a blog make with ad networks?

It depends on whether you’re using the CPC, CPM, or CPA model, and how much the ad network pays for every click, 1000 views, or lead, respectively.

On average, a CPM ad can earn you $3 for every thousand views. So if you have 2 CPM ads on a blog post that gets 1000 views each month, you will earn $6. If you get your page views up to 10,000 per month, your monthly blog income for that blog post will be $60.

Meanwhile, a CPC ad can earn you an average of $2 per click. So if you get 30 clicks a month, your monthly blog income will be $60.

CPA ads earn anywhere between $0.40 and $90 per lead. So if an ad network pays $5 per lead, and you get at least 12 people to perform the desired action, you earn $60 for that month.

Ultimately, your earnings will be influenced by how much traffic you bring in. And if you want to boost your traffic and blog profit, you have to blog consistently and promote posts on social media.
