One month – that’s all it took me to grow my Pinterest followers by 84 percent. And I was able to more than double that number to 87 percent a month later. No group boards, no mass following people. Just a simple Pinterest growth strategy that can massively increase Pinterest followers.
In this blog post, you’ll learn to grow your Pinterest with a strategy that I’ve personally tried on my Pinterest account.
The Secret To My Massive Pinterest Growth
I’ve been on Pinterest since April 2018 but didn’t spend much time on it. It wasn’t until July that I started actively pinning. By then, I had a little over 100 followers.
It took me three whole months to get to 114 followers.
You can imagine my disappointment, but I didn’t want to give up too soon. So I developed a strategy that could help me get Pinterest followers for free… and it worked!
When August came, I switched to Tailwind and that’s when my Pinterest skyrocketed. By the time you read this, I would already have 600+ followers thanks to Tailwind.
Can I use manual pinning for this strategy?
My Pinterest growth hack started out as a manual pinning strategy – and you can do the same thing to grow your Pinterest followers.
However, it’s not something I would recommend. And I highly encourage that you use the Tailwind Pinterest scheduler to post pins. But if you’re looking to get Pinterest followers for free, you can use my strategy with manual pinning.
How I Grew My Pinterest Followers By 87% In Just One Month
When I started Pinterest, I didn’t know what to do. So I treated it like any social media. I would go online, pin my blog post, and repin it to my boards.
I only managed to increase Pinterest followers by an average of 38% each month for three straight months. By the end of June 2018, I only had 114 followers.
Without a clear strategy, it was obvious that my Pinterest growth staggered.
My first Pinterest strategy – and why I think it failed
I had it all laid out. The plan was to follow anywhere between 5-10 people each day and share 5-10 of their pins across my boards.
My goal was to increase Pinterest followers by getting people to follow me back. And a sure-fire way of getting noticed was to share their pins, since that would blow up their notifications.
I started my manual pinning strategy on July 1 with 114 followers.
I would log in to Pinterest, follow 2-3 people at a time, and share 5 to 10 of their pins consecutively. Then, I would come back a few hours later and do the same thing.
I continued doing this until I reached my maximum daily follows of 5 to 10 people. I spent 10 to 15 painstaking hours each week on Pinterest, sometimes pinning up to 100 times each day!
But I was making a lot of mistakes…
- I pinned more than 50 times a day
- I would pin up to 20 times in a row
- I wasted way too much time on Pinterest
- I wasn’t pinning or following people on weekends
By the end of the month (July 31), I managed to increase Pinterest followers from 114 to 210.
I gained 96 followers and experienced a massive Pinterest growth rate of 84%.
It wasn’t a bad number. In fact, I was very impressed that I was able to grow Pinterest followers without spending a dime.
Not bad for a free pinning strategy.
So why do I think it failed?
First, because I was wasting precious hours. Spending 10 to 15 hours each week on a Pinterest strategy was not easy. Within one week of manual pinning, I knew I had to up my game.
I also didn’t gain back as much people I followed. Out of the 204 people I followed throughout the month of July, I only gained 96 followers which is less than half (47%).
Finally, the total increase of followers wasn’t worth it after a drop in engagement. I noticed that on days I pinned more than 50 times, my engagement dropped significantly. I wasn’t getting as many views or followers.
The Tailwind strategy that exploded my Pinterest
After one month of manual pinning, I signed up for a year of Tailwind Plus. But you can always get a free Tailwind trial with up to 100 pins. (Read my guide to getting started and setting up Tailwind in my article, Tailwind for Pinterest: How to Get Started on the Best Pinterest Scheduler)
I started using Tailwind on August 1 and had 210 followers.
This time, I wasn’t going to make the same mistakes and changed my strategy. Throughout August, I consistently followed 10 people each day on weekdays. So that’s 50 new people followed every week. But instead of manual pinning, I used Tailwind to schedule 4 pins daily from each person I followed and 10 of mine.
With this Tailwind strategy, I was able to limit pinning to 50 times a day, which is the maximum daily recommended. I pinned 7 days a week. On weekends, I scheduled 2 pins from each person I followed that week.
By August 31, I had 392 followers.
I gained 182 followers and had a Pinterest growth rate of 87% compared to 84% on the previous month.
Now you might think… why should I get Tailwind if I can increase Pinterest followers by as much with manual pinning? Here are 3 reasons why.
How Tailwind helped my Pinterest Strategy
1. Tailwind increases your Pinterest engagement
With manual pinning, I had to pin consecutively. Since pins are posted seconds apart, this limited the number of people who could see them.
Tailwind lets you space pins evenly throughout the day so more people get to see them. The Pinterest scheduler also lets you pin any time and not just when you’re available. That means you get to be active on Pinterest even when you’re offline, at work, sleeping, or traveling.
If you’re not convinced, check out my Pinterest Analytics above and compare the engagement I received with manual pinning vs Tailwind. As you can see, my Tailwind strategy greatly increased my Pinterest engagement.
2. Tailwind gets you more Pinterest followers
While I was on my Tailwind strategy last August, I gained 182 followers out of the 255 people I followed. Tailwind helped me gain 71% of the people I followed. I also gained twice more followers with Tailwind than I did with manual pinning.
My manual pinning strategy from July only got me 96 followers out of the 204 people I followed. Manual pinning gained me 47% of the people I followed.
Why is this?
I can’t say for sure, but I think it has to do with the spacing of pins. By scheduling pins minutes to hours apart, people you’re following are more likely to notice and follow you back. Another possible reason is that Tailwind increases your visibility on Pinterest, and in turn helps you attract followers.
3. Tailwind saves you time
Tailwind reduced the time I spent pinning each day by half. In total, I spent no more than 5-7 hours to schedule 350 pins throughout the week from 50 new people I followed.
I know it doesn’t sound much of a difference. 5 to 7 hours each week is still plenty of time. But you have to consider that it’s the strategy that takes time.
Once you get to 500 or 1000 followers, you don’t have to follow as much people or share their pins. Now that I’ve stopped following people and pin straight from my Pinterest Smart Feed, I only spend 1-2 hours to schedule pins for an entire week.
Tailwind has been such a huge time-saver!
More Tips to Increase Pinterest Followers
My Pinterest growth hack is not just about following people and then sharing their pins. There were a couple other things I did as part of my overall strategy. If you want to significantly increase Pinterest followers, you have to do the following as well:
- Only follow people with less than 1,000 followers
- Stick to quality leads, not quantity by following people who are related to your niche (this is why I don’t recommend mass following)
- Follow active Pinterest users who have been online for the past 24-48 hours
- Use Tailwind to schedule pins on weekends
These 4 tips can help you get as many followers, if not, more than I ever did in a month! You already know the secret to my massive Pinterest growth, so why not see it for yourself and try Tailwind for free?
