In order to allow your visitors to navigate easily on your WordPress website, you will need to edit the WordPress menu bar. The WordPress menu improves page navigation allowing you to display links to important pages on your WordPress blog or WordPress website.

How To Add Menu Bar in WordPress
Most WordPress themes come with one or more places or locations that a menu can be displayed. In this article, I will be using the WordPress Twenty Seventeen theme for the examples. Your theme may have additional menu locations and menu options.
However, the basic menus covered here should apply in most cases. Check your theme documentation for more information.
In most cases when a new WordPress website is installed, there will be no menu displayed in the theme. This is the case with the WordPress Twenty Seventeen theme.
There are two main steps for creating a menu in WordPress.
- Create the menu and add menu items to the menu.
- Choose a location on your WordPress to display the menu.
Below I will show you how to edit the WordPress menus in both the WordPress Admin and in the WordPress Customizer.
How To Create Menu from WordPress Admin
The first place you can edit WordPress menu is in the WordPress Admin dashboard.
How To Add Menu Bar From WordPress Admin
Select the Menus option from the WordPress Admin Appearance menu.
Select “Save Menu” to save the pages to the menu.
Adding Posts and Categories to a menu is similar to adding pages.
How To Add Posts To WordPress Menu
To add posts to the WordPress menu, expand the Posts section, select one or more posts, and then select the “Add to Menu” button.
The selected posts are now displayed under the Menu Structure heading.
Select “Save Menu” to save the posts to the menu.
How To Categories To WordPress Menu
To add categories to the WordPress menu, expand the categories section, select one or more categories, and then select the “Add to Menu” button.
The selected categories are now displayed under the Menu Structure heading.
Select “Save Menu” to save the categories to the menu.
How To Add Custom Links To WordPress Menu
To add custom links to the WordPress menu, expand the Custom Links section, enter the URL and Link Text, and then select the “Add to Menu” button.
The custom link is now displayed under the Menu Structure heading.
Select “Save Menu” to save the custom link to the menu.
How To Change Menu Location In WordPress Admin
Once you create a WordPress menu, you need to assign the menu to a location. On the WordPress Twenty Seventeen theme, there are two locations to display the menu. They are the Top Menu and Social Menu. Other themes may have different locations and a different number of locations.
Under “Menu Settings, check the checkbox of the location to display the menu and then click “Save Menu”.
Hover over the top-level menu item to see the submenu.
How To Create Menu From WordPress Customizer
The second place you can edit WordPress menu is in the WordPress Customizer.
How To Add Menu Bar from WordPress Customizer
Select Appearance and then Customizer. When your homepage is displayed, the Customizer menu will be displayed on the left.
How To Change The Menu Appearance in WordPress
Changing the menu appearance in the default WordPress themes is limited because the menu doesn’t have a place to update the menu appearance specifically. However, there is one way to change the appearance. You can update the appearance in the WordPress menu CSS section in the Customizer.
There are many themes that let you update the menu appearance using the WordPress Customizer. One of those themes is OceanWP.
Below are the steps to change the menu color and change the font for the WordPress menu using the WordPress Customizer in the OceanWP theme.
How To Change The Menu Color In WordPress Customizer
To change the menu color in the OceanWP theme the WordPress Customizer, go to the General Section and then Top Bar.
Here you can make Typography changes to the Font Family, Font Weight, Font Style, Text Transform, and Font Size.
How To Add Other Menus In WordPress
You can add other menus besides Header Menus in WordPress. Two of the most common locations to put menus are the sidebar and footer.
Menus can be added to two these areas from the Widget menu under the Appearance menu item in the WordPress Admin.
