Why is blog traffic generation so important?
You can do so much with a blog than just share your thoughts. These days, you can use a blog for business or as a means of income. How do blogs work to make money? Well, every reader is a potential customer and an opportunity for you to sell. By attracting readers, you increase your chances for profit.
But it isn’t as easy as it sounds.
Many bloggers will teach you different ways to monetize a blog without telling you one thing – that you’ll need tons of readers. How much you make actually depends on the amount of traffic you get.
If you really want to make money blogging, you have to learn…
- How to get blog followers

How do blogs work to generate traffic?
In my previous post Blog vs Website, we defined a blog as:
“… a type of informational website with articles (blog posts) written by the person maintaining it (blogger).”
Needless to say, content is integral to every blog. Without content, there is no blog.
Search engines and your blog
Now, remember when I told you that search engines love blogs? I wasn’t kidding. Search engines such as Google and Bing thrive on content.
What is a search engine?
To put simply, a search engine is a program that lets you scour the internet for information. All you have to do is type a query in the search box. After analyzing your query, a search engine provides a list of related web pages which you can click-through. These are called search results.
How does a search engine work?
A search engine keeps copies of blogs, websites, and their web pages in a process known as indexing. These pages are indexed by web crawlers, an automated program which browses the internet and stores information on the web pages it’s visited.
Web crawlers discover new pages by following links on a page. They copy and index each page, creating a large database within a short period. When you use a search engine to find information online, it pulls results from its own database of indexed web pages.
Search engines predict the information you need based on your query. For example, a person searching for “cookie recipes” is most likely looking for recipe ideas on cookies. In response, a search engine goes through its repository and displays search results.
How search engines help with blog traffic generation
Now this is where it gets interesting. Whenever you write fresh content, you’re actually creating new ways for people to find you. Keep in mind that search engines value content. The more you blog, the more of your pages are indexed.
You need to get as many of your web pages indexed as possible. So that when people search for related content, a search engine will be able to offer more web pages from your blog as a suggestion.
Unlike a website which has limited pages and static content, a blog is constantly updated with new pages and content. Every post you publish increases your visibility to online audiences. In turn, this can increase blog traffic.
The social aspect of blogging
Aside from generating organic traffic through search engines, there is another less-talked about approach on how to grow blog traffic – and that is social media. Social media refers to websites or applications that allow people to create and share content to other people in their network.
Some of the most popular social media platforms include…
How to get blog followers on social media
One way you can passively increase blog traffic is when people share your posts on social media. But if you want to actively grow your blog traffic, you should consider setting up social networks and link them to your blog.
Here are the benefits of social media for bloggers:
- Promote your blog and/or business
- Increase your brand’s visibility
- Improve your reach
Valuable content is key
When it comes to blog traffic generation, providing valuable content is key. By creating useful and meaningful blog posts, you can attract the right audiences. Remember that people use search engines to find relevant and oftentimes, specific information. The only way you can get people to read your blog is by giving them exactly what they need.
Even in social media, you will need highly engaging content to get your blog noticed. Otherwise, they won’t find any reason to read or share your posts.
How do blogs work to make money?
By now, you probably think that getting huge amounts of traffic will automatically increase sales and boost your profit.
Well, not necessarily.
Blog traffic is such a broad term, and not everyone who visits will actually read your posts. Some of them will leave within seconds, never to return.
So how can you get people to read your blog? It all starts with good content that hooks readers in. Once you get followers, you’ll be one step closer to a money-making blog.
Converting your readers into customers
Since you want to make money with a blog, your primary goal should be sales. In order to get sales, you have to look at your readers as potential customers.
The mere fact they’re on your blog already says a lot. Since they’re reading your posts, they’re more likely to be interested in what you have to offer. When you get to this point, it’s only a matter of converting them into buyers.
Making buyers out of potential customers
There are countless ways you can turn readers into paying customers. Starting a blog and setting up social media are two things that can help with your sales and conversions.
How do blogs work to do that? By building your credibility and making it easier for you to engage and earn the trust of online audiences.
Other strategies that improve conversions include…
- Developing a sales funnel
- Email marketing and list building
- Social media campaigns
Having a well-designed blog can also help with conversions. You’ll need a professional website designer who can create a fast and mobile-friendly blog with a beautiful layout. It has to have simple navigation and a built-in search feature so people won’t have trouble finding what they need on your blog.
Promoting Your Business With A Blog
A blog is the perfect medium to promote your business. Whether you have products and services of your own, or exploring other ways to monetize a blog, it can give you the exposure you need.
By generating organic traffic through search engines and social media, a blog can drastically increase your sales. Hopefully, this answers your question of how do blogs work in helping you get followers and earn money.
It is worth noting that if you want to make money blogging, you must choose a flexible platform that complements your business and offers multiple avenues for profit. Personally, I would recommend WordPress.
